Bikes In Schools with Bike On New Zealand

Our last volunteer project as part of Alycat’s Walkabout was with Bike On New Zealand. Man, what an incredible organization! Bike On New Zealand helps schools develop, fundraise and introduce biking programs as part of their curriculum. Once all funding is raised, Bike On New Zealand works with the schools to build different biking tracks and order the correct bikes. They also help develop a class to teach both the teachers and students how to safely ride a bike.

The Street Art of Melbourne

Crazy and unexpected, that is the only way to describe how the last few days have gone. For the first time during Alycat’s Walkabout, things did not go at all according to plan. One my flight back to Melbourne from Sydney, I experienced some severe medical issues that ended up keeping me from flying to New Zealand as planned this weekend. As you can imagine, I was devastated. But after reworking the schedule for our last week and getting some much needed R&R, I am ready to tackle our exciting project in New Zealand.

Since I was in Australia three days longer than planned, my friends decided to give me the non-touristy tour of Melbourne. Melbourne is known for it’s laneway culture, the side street cafes and bars, the art. They took me down this little side street named Hosier Lane. It has become the hub for street art in Melbourne. The designs are intricate and so well done! While we were visiting, several artists were out working on projects. We spent quite a while watching them. It was fascinating to watch them work!

Rottnest Island

Welcome to Rottnest Island, one of the most beautiful places I have ever been! I have been lucky enough to see some incredible places around the world, but none of them have left me quite as speechless as Rottnest. This place is beautiful. The water was an array of colors and teeming with life.

Australian Baseball League

Who’s ready for some Australian Baseball League action? It was one of the must-see/shoot items on my list.

When I started looking at schedules, I was worried that getting to a game might not happen as ABL teams only play on the weekends. Throw in how few teams there are and their locations, it was proving difficult to find a game to attend. Finally, as my schedule came together, I found one game that I would be able to get to during my five weeks. Perth vs. Adelaide. I jumped on the chance to go and shoot it.

Kangaroo Island

Welcome to Kangaroo Island! Of course, I don’t quite understand why it is called Kangaroo Island and not Sea Lion Island or something else. Over the two days we spent on the island, I only saw one kangaroo. However, we saw hundreds of sea lions.

Kangaroo Island is a wonderful, surprisingly large island off the coast of Southern Australia, just south of Adelaide. It is a 30-40 minute ferry ride over, but well worth the trip if you are in the area. It is full of nature, wildlife and wine. Yes, wine! It was discovered several years ago that Kangaroo Island has the perfect soil and climate combination for making wine. So there are dozens of wineries scattered around. Since Hannah enjoys sampling wine (and since it was her birthday!), we decided to try a few out. Delicious!
